The whale migration turned to its end and we are missing humpback, southern right whale, minke whale and blue whale. We had an exciting season with many and also before unseen encounters.

There are a lot of things we don’t know about humpbacks. Why is a calf with no mother breaching and tail slapping off Sugarloaf Rocks? Why isn’t it up north with its mother? Where is its mother? Why is it breaching and tail slapping?

Welcome to Geographe Marine Research LTD
Each year we see some changes in the pattern of migration of humpbacks in particular, and southern right whales.
In the past we would not see any humpbacks until late August. However each year our monitoring program starts earlier and earlier. In 2021 we intend to start in early July.
We have been seeing whales already. We had an April report from the public of a southern right whale in Geographe Bay. In May a southern right whale was filmed by a drone operator (operating under licence from DBCA), and he was able to get photos suitable for PhotoID – very important.
In May there were manta rays in Geographe Bay, and a humpback lunge feeding on baitfish off Gannett Rock.
There have been other reports of humpbacks every few days from late May on. These early humpbacks do not appear to be migrating and are quite young.
